African Grey Parrot Has Sense of Humor
and Huge Vocabulary

A captive African grey parrot named N'kisi is
breaking down barriers in interspecies
communication, perhaps more so than any
other animal on earth.

N'kisi has a vocabulary of 950 words, shows
signs of a sense of humor and is able to come
up with new words and phrases to explain
novel ideas (just as human children do).

The parrot is raising the bar when it comes to
scientists' perceptions of animals' cognitive
abilities, and has some concerned that other
captive parrots may not be getting their
intellectual needs met.

Among some of N'kisi's stunning examples of
intellect:

Inventing the phrase "pretty smell medicine"
to describe aromatherapy.
Saying "Got a chimp?" upon meeting
chimpanzee expert Dr. Jane Goodall for the
first time (after viewing photos of her with
apes).
Saying "You got to put this bird on the
camera," when another parrot hung upside
down on his perch.

There's clearly a lot left to be uncovered when
it comes to humans' relationships with animals.
It's already known, for instance, that having a
pet can play a significant role in having good
health.

Life is Simple. It is us Humans that
make it difficult.

THIS IS SOME GOOD ADVICE!

If a dog was the teacher, you
would learn stuff like:

When loved ones come home,
always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to
go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air
and the wind in your face to be
pure ecstasy.

When it's in your best interest,
practice obedience.

Let others know when they've
invaded your territory.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people
touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl
will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your
back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water
and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around
and wag your entire body.

No matter how often you're
scolded, don't buy into the guilt
thing and pout..! Run right back
and make friends.

Delight in the simple joy of a long
walk.

Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
Stop when you have had enough.

Be loyal. Never pretend to be
something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig
until you find it.

When someone is having a bad
day, be silent, sit close by and
nuzzle them gently.

having a dog makes you rich.

To err is human; to forgive, canine.

Money will buy you a pretty good
dog, but it won't buy the wag of his
tail.
-- Henry Wheeler Shaw

If you are a dog and your owner
suggests that you wear a
sweater... suggest that he wear a

-- Fran Lebowitz

You can say any fool thing to a
dog, and the dog will give you this
look that says, "My God, you're
RIGHT! I never would've thought of
that!"
-- Dave Barry

If your dog doesn't like someone,
you probably shouldn't either.

Old dogs, like old shoes, are
comfortable. They might be a bit
out of shape and a little worn
around the edges, but they fit well.
-- Bonnie Wilcox

The more people I meet, the more I

In order to really enjoy a dog, one
doesn't merely train him to be
semi-human. The point is to open
oneself to the possibility of
becoming partly a dog.
-- Edward Hoagland

Dogs are our link to paradise. They
don't know evil or jealousy or
discontent. To sit with a dog on a
hillside on a glorious afternoon is
to be back in Eden, where doing
nothing was not boring -- it was
peace.
-- Milan Kundera

When you feel dog tired at night, it
may be because you've growled all

A really companionable dog is an
accident of nature. You can't get it
by breeding for it, and you can't
buy it with money. It just happens
along.
-- E B White

I think we are drawn to dogs
because they are the uninhibited

-- George Bird Evans

Even the tiniest Poodle or
Chihuahua is still a wolf at heart.
-- Dorothy Hinshaw

Dogs never talk about themselves
but listen to you while you talk
about yourself, and keep up an
appearance of being interested in
the conversation.
-- Jerome K. Jerome

Things that upset a terrier may
pass virtually unnoticed by a Great

-- Smiley Blanton

I've seen a look in dogs' eyes, a
quickly vanishing look of amazed
contempt, and I am convinced that
basically dogs think humans are
nuts.
-- John Steinbeck

You may have a dog that won't sit
up, roll over or even cook
breakfast, not because she's too
stupid to learn how but because
she's too smart to bother.
-- Rick Horowitz

My husband and I are either going
to buy a dog or have a child. We
can't decide whether to ruin our
carpets or ruin our lives.
-- Rita Rudner

When I am wrong, he is delighted
to forgive.
When I am angry, he clowns to
make me smile.
When I am happy, he is joy
unbounded.
When I am a fool, he ignores it.
When I succeed, he brags.
Without him, I am only another
human.
With him, I am all powerful.
I know a secret comfort and a
private peace.
He has brought me understanding
where I was ignorant.
His head on my knee can heal my
human hurts.
His presence is protection against
dark and unknown things.
He has promised to wait for me in
case I need him.
And I expect I will, as I always have.
        -- Gene Hill
Oscar the Cat

If you were to see this
beautiful black and white
cat lying on your bed, then it
won't be long before
you pass to your final resting
place.

Dr. David Dosa, assistant
professor at Brown Univeristy
School of Medicine has
published a paper in the
New England Journal of
Medicine documenting Oscar
the
Cat's uncanny ability to know
when a patient will die.

Oscar as a 2 year old feline
was adopted and grew up
on the dementia unit at Steere
House Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center, near
Providence R.I.

This facility treats patients
with Alzheimer's,
Parkinsons's Disease and
other mental illnesses.
Oscar didn't really seem to
warm up to anyone.

Dr. Dosa says of Oscar, "This
is not a cat that's
friendly to people."
Oscar spent most of his day
devoted to sleeping.

His favorite
napping spots were on stacks
of patient reports, or on the
desk at the nurses' station. Or
in the linen closet.

When awake, Oscar shows a
solemn dedication to duty,
making regular "inspection"
rounds of the unit, sauntering
in and out of patient rooms -
as if checking on the
condition of the occupants.

But the staff also noticed
something very peculiar about
Oscar.

When a patient is nearing
death, Oscar nearly always
appears
at the last hour or so. Oscar
will hop up on their bed,
snuggle beside the patient
and purr like no cat has
ever purred before.

No one knows how or why
Oscar does this, but she has
been documented in 25 cases
of knowing which patient is
about to die.

"We've come to recognise
him hopping on the bed as one
indicator the end is very
near," said Mary Miranda,
charge nurse on the floor that
is home to 41 patients
in the final stages of
Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, a
stroke,
and other mentally debilitating
diseases. "Oscar's been
consistently right."

funny ha-ha but
